Virtually unlimited resources are now available to Bible students at PRTS, thanks in part to our subscription databases, but also owing largely to the diligent indexing of scripture texts over the years done by Dr. Beeke and other at PRTS. Besides the obvious (Bible commentaries, etc.), the following resources are at your disposal:
ATLA-Religion database. This subscription database allows you to search by Scripture Citation through back issues of such journals as Bibliotheca Sacra, Journal of Biblical Literature, Bulletin for Biblical Research, Calvin Theological Journal, Scottish Journal of Theology, and Westminster Theological Journal. Many of these journals offer full-text articles online. See "Find Articles & Journals" on the PRTS Library website for details. (ATLA access is restricted to PRTS students.)
Online
catalog. Try a keyword search
in our online catalog for specific Scripture references. For example: "Romans
1" entered as a keyword search will result in dozens of books or audio sermons
(by mp3 download) that are either about Romans 1, or perhaps have Romans 1
indexed in their table of contents. You can also try a subject search of our catalog, but books of the Bible must be
entered using Library of Congress subject headings, such as: "Bible O.T.
Joshua" for books on Joshua. Use "Bible N.T. John" for books or commentaries
about the Gospel of John. When using the
online catalog, remember to limit your results to PRTS (unless you also want to
search Cornerstone's library--"View Entire Collection"
Theological
Journals Library & the Logos Bible search engine. This database is
restricted to use on one library computer, but allows one to simultaneously
search about 25 evangelical journals (some back to 1934, and through 2008), and
hundreds of other biblical reference works found in the Logos software.
Reference
books with excellent Scripture Indexes. For example:
- Theological Dictionary of the New Testament (TDNT/Kittel)--vol. X (Index): BS2312.K5813
- New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology (NIDNTT); see the separate Index volume: BS2312.N48.
- Various books of sermons, for example: 20 Centuries of Great Preaching (BV4231; Scripture index-- vol.13)
- Bibliographies related to your chosen text. Certain commentaries provide extensive bibliographies (see Word Biblical Commentary series, for example); Metzger's Index to Periodical Literature on Christ and the Gospels; Wagner's Exegetical Bibliography of the NT (Z7772.L1W34).
- Textual & subject Indexes of Spurgeon's Sermons--BX6333.S6
- Old Testament Abstracts, and New Testament Abstracts. Found in the library's reference section, these volumes allow one to review abstracts of journal articles from 1956 through the current year, indexed by Scripture texts.
